Every day, physicians navigate decisions that extend beyond their medical expertise, confronting legal and operational risks inherent to their profession. Imagine if there were a trusted partner to guide and support them in the process.
Physicians Insurance, a mutual company, specializing in malpractice and medical professional liability insurance, is that partner, providing robust protection against legal claims. This allows healthcare professionals to concentrate on their primary objective—patient care.
“Our role is to protect, defend, and support our Members - so that they can excel in their professions without distraction,” says Anne Flitcroft, VP of Risk Management.
At Physicians Insurance, there are no external investors or owners. Physicians Insurance is a mutual company, which makes it stand out among other insurance providers, as its policyholders are the owners. Premiums are pooled to fund Members' collective defense, providing a robust safety net when needed. This foundation enables the company to concentrate exclusively on serving the best interests of its Members, ensuring they receive comprehensive support and protection in the face of a claim or adverse event.
By proactively identifying, assessing, and addressing risks that could lead to malpractice claims, Physicians Insurance works in partnership with its Members to prevent claims before they occur. A preventative strategy not only enhances overall care delivery and promotes patient safety practices, but also significantly reduces the likelihood of claims, providing Members with the peace of mind that comes from knowing they are supported comprehensively. Should any claims arise, Physicians Insurance stands by its Members with rigorous defense and an impressive success rate at trial.
Strengthening Risk Management
The pandemic exacerbated staffing shortages and burnout in hospitals. Staff were left to manage multiple roles, including the vital job of risk management, where knowledge and experience are essential.
In response to this crisis, Physicians Insurance developed the Risk Mentorship Program, a 12-month curriculum designed to address the high turnover and lack of experience in risk management. It offers a structured yet flexible developmental pathway for new or inexperienced risk managers, featuring monthly meetings and an initial comprehensive evaluation. Led by experienced risk consultants, this hands-on approach ensures that participants receive mentorship tailored to their needs. By focusing on identified areas of opportunity, the program helps new risk managers grow into their roles with confidence and effectiveness.
Support extends to healthcare providers at hospitals in rural areas, where financial constraints and limited resources create challenges. Understanding the specific needs of these communities, Physicians Insurance works closely with Members to develop risk-management solutions that are practical and sustainable.
Our role is to protect, defend, and support them so they can excel in their professions without distraction.
“We take pride in customizing our services, instead of providing a one-size-fits-all approach,” says Flitcroft. “We tailor education and tools to address the specific needs of each Member, ensuring that we tackle their unique needs effectively.”
Collaborative Approach and Innovative Solutions
Physicians Insurance’s team is spread across diverse regions, ranging from urban centers to rural communities. This broad geographical reach allows them to truly understand the unique needs and challenges of Members. Team members work proactively, regularly checking in and serving as the company’s eyes and ears in understanding Members’ pain points firsthand. They assist individual Members and gather insights to develop new tools and resources.
This was evident when a long-time Member expressed concerns about their outpatient psychiatric clinic and asked Physicians Insurance to conduct an on-site risk assessment. This involved leadership interviews, a physical walk-through and a review of various records and files. Physicians Insurance identified areas for improvement in a collaborative, non-punitive way. The team researched and worked with a physician expert to create a new risk assessment tool with recommendations and resources. This tool was piloted with the Member, who found it incredibly valuable. This successful collaboration not only met their needs, but also added a new resource to benefit other Members, showcasing Physician Insurance’s creative approach in going above and beyond to bring meaningful solutions.
This year, Physicians Insurance launched a webinar series, hosting three sessions on pertinent topics such as medication diversion, AI in employment practices, and cognitive and behavioral opportunities with medical staff.
These educational efforts are designed to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge to manage risks effectively, allowing them to concentrate on patient care.
As healthcare evolves, Physicians Insurance remains focused on anticipating and adapting to the future challenges of its Members, ensuring they receive the most relevant and effective support in their practices.
